Dr. Frances Scully is happy to share one of her favorite programs, Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT), with everyone.

Compassion Cultivation Training aims to develop the characteristics of kindness, compassion, and empathy for others and oneself. Certified teachers worldwide teach others about CCT, and Dr. Scully is one of them. You can get many things from CCT, and Dr. Scully is more than happy to share those things with you.

The course is now available online and is spread out over eight weeks. Dr. Scully can also lead CCT sessions for 60 or 90 minutes. Let’s discuss the course, its benefits, and how it is delivered below!

Defining Compassion Cultivation Training

The Compassion Cultivation Training course (CCT) is a six-step process for fostering empathy, kindness, and compassion for oneself and others. What’s more, the course incorporates scientific research on compassion, modern psychology, and contemplative practices.

The curriculum was created by researchers, clinical psychologists, and contemplative thinkers (particularly Thupten Jinpa, Ph. D) from the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford Medical School.

CCT first entails mental exercise, second is the growth of specific interpersonal abilities, and lastly, a purposeful selection of compassionate thoughts and deeds. Compassion training has many benefits beyond fostering more sympathy and concern for others. It also entails the cultivation of tenacity to avoid becoming overly sympathetic, the fortitude to face pain head-on, and the strength to act with kindness.

Who Are Encouraged to Enroll and Attend?

Anyone who wants to develop compassion for themselves and others can benefit from Compassion Cultivation Training. Individuals who can significantly benefit from CCT are:

• Managers and executives
• People who are seeking to increase mindfulness and awareness
• Educators
• Employees and public service leaders
• Caregivers and parents
• Therapists and healthcare professionals

Moreover, this training can help people who work in various professions and situations. Although daily meditation is crucial to the training, prior meditation experience is unnecessary.

The Reported Effects of Compassion Cultivation Training

Each student will have a different experience. However, studies show that CCT may result in the following:

• An increase in empathy and concern for oneself and others
• Willingness to accept sympathy from others
• Feelings of happiness, joy, and peace
• Accepting feelings as they come up
• Improved sleep
• Improved contentment in job and life
• The capability to live in the present moment

Compassion comes naturally to us, and what’s more is that it can be learned. Daily stress, social expectations, and life events might stifle it, leading to medical and psychological issues. The excellent news is that individuals can nourish themselves while honing their instinct for compassion.

It’s important to note that this procedure needs time, consistent attention, the right equipment, and a nurturing environment.

How Will You Get the Compassion Cultivation Training Course?

Dr. Frances Scully offers her CCT course online, which people can attend via Zoom. Classes last two hours and promote compassion through discussions, active listening, communication exercises, and didactic presentations/lectures. There are daily meditation practices (throughout an 8-week plan) as well, which aim to improve one’s awareness.

The second week is all about compassion and loving-kindness for a loved one.
